The Mechanism of Nucleophilic Addition Reaction of Mercaptan to Furfuralacetone

Abstract
The rate-constants of the nucleophilic addition reaction of n-butyl mercaptan to furfuralacetone were determined in various acidic and basic media and the rate equations that can be applied the reaction in various acidic media and basic media were obtained.
From this rate equation, the mechanisms of the reaction are different in acidic and basic media respectively.
The rate constants of the nucleophilic addition reaction are found to reach their maximum at the vicinity of pH 7 and from this maximum value, the rate-constants declined symmetrically on both acidic and basic side. Lastly the constants remain respectively fixed at below pH4 and above pH 9.
